A new regulatory amendment ensures that Danish pharmacies will always inform customers of the cheapest medicine when they buy prescription-only medicines.
Before, customers could not always be sure that the person behind the counter at a pharmacy would inform them about the price of a possibly less expensive, authorised alternative to the product the doctor had prescribed.
With the regulatory amendment, which comes into force today, employees at Danish pharmacies are now required to always inform customers whether there is a less expensive product to the one the customer has been prescribed.
This also applies in cases where the pharmacy does not have the cheapest product in stock.
From today, the pharmacy must inform customers about the price of the product the customer has initially requested, the price of the cheapest alternative and the price difference.
The only exception to the rule is if the prescriber has indicated that the medicine must not be substituted.
