Applications for individual reimbursement of medicinal products in 2006
In 2006, the Danish Medicines Agency reviewed some 106.700 applications for single reimbursement (down 4% on 2005), apporx. 14.600 applications for reimbursement for the chronically ill (down 37 % on 2005), approx. 9.200 applications for reimbursement for the terminally ill (same level as in 2005) and approx. 2.700 applications for increased reimbursement (same level as in 2005, cf. table 1 below).

Consumption of NSAID in 2005
In 2005, approximately 15 per cent of the Danish population bought NSAID on prescription (approximately 830.000 persons). This figure covers persons undergoing both long-term and short-term treatment, for example person with chronic arthritis diseases or persons with an isolated need, for instance in connection with sports injuries.

A recent survey conducted by the Danish Medicines Agency maintains that there is limited knowledge among the Danish people about the rules applicable to and the risks associated with buying medicine on the internet and abroad.

Dose dispensing in the primary health sector - the first six months of 2007
During the first six months of 2007, 36,962 people had their medicinal products dose dispensed. Elderly women constitute the majority of this group. The consumption of dose dispensed medicinal products accounted for 2.0 percent of the total consumption of medicinal products during the first six months of 2007.

Dose dispensing in the primary health sector - the last 6 months of 2006
During the last 6 months of 2006, apporximately 35.000 people had their medicinal products dose dispensed. Elderly women constitute the main part of this group. The consumption of dose dispensed medicinal products amounts to 2.0 per cent of the total consumption of medicinal products during the last 6 months of 2006.

Increase in consumption of urinary antispasmodics
More and more people buy the so-called urinary antispamodics for treatment of overactive bladder. In four years, consumption has increased by 58.6 percent from 19.476 persons in 2001 to 30.899 in 2005. The increased consumption of this type of medicinal products is specifically centred on the more expensive products, which has led to a considerable increase in the sale of these products.

Investigation of pharmacy discounts
Based on an approach from the Danish Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Lif) in February 2006, the Ministry of the Interior and Health requested the Danish Medicines Agency to investigate whether any new discount arrangements were introduced in 2006 contrary to the rules in that area.

Positive evaluation of the Institute for Rational Pharmacotherapy
Since 1999, the Institute for Rational Pharmacotherapy (IRF) has worked to promote rational use of medicinal products in Denmark. In 2005, an external evaluation of IRF was commissioned by the Danish Medicines Agency, the aim of which was to investigate IRF's reputation and credibility among its primary target group (general practitioners) and other relevant groups. The enclosed reports is a result of this evaluation.

Product defects and withdrawal of medicinal products in 2006
In 2006 there were more reports on product defects compared with 2005. The reports concerned both marketed and non-marketed medicinal products. including magistral medicinal products which are manufactured according to a doctor's directions.

The consumption of benzodiazepines and benzodiazepine related drugs
In the 4th quarter 2003, it was decided to launch a range of initiatives with the aim of maintaining and strengthening the trend at the time with an overall decreasing consumption of benzodiazepines and benzodiazepine related drugs. The consumption development over the past five years is shown below.
