The ASR hip implants from the company DePuy were recalled from the Danish market in August 2010. The product was placed on the Danish market in July 2003. As far as the Danish Medicines Agency knows, up to 618 patients in Denmark may be affected by this matter.
The implants had several quality issues. The patients who have had problems with their implants have experienced pain, swelling and difficulty in walking.
When the company recalled the implants, they asked the hospitals that had performed operations with the implants to contact the patients concerned. This enables patient and specialist to discuss how to best handle the situation – and to assess if the implant needs to be replaced and and how to follow up on it in future.
If you are unsure if your implant is one of the implants concerned, please contact the ward or hospital responsible for your operation.
Patients who believe they have been harmed by these implants are advised to report it to the Danish Patient Insurance Association.
You can also read DePuy's ASR Hip Recall Guide, which contains information to patients (in multiple languages). Note that DePuy has established an ASR help line in each country listed, i.e. if you want information about Danish conditions, you should probably call the help line number listed under the information in Danish.
