Medicines and weight loss

/News - miscellaneous

A number of medicines are available on the market for the treatment of life-threatening obesity. Most of these products are sold on prescription, but just recently a new medicine called Alli® was launched for over-the-counter sale.

If you want to lose weight, the Danish Medicines Agency recommends you to follow the advice from the Danish National Board of Health of combining exercise and regular physical activity with a nutritionally balanced diet, even though weight-loss products are available both with and without a prescription. Several studies have shown that a nutritionally balanced diet (low in fat and calories) combined with physical activity has a beneficial and preventive effect on obesity.

If you are obese, the Danish Medicines Agency advises you to talk to your doctor about your condition.

In the factbox to the right, please find a link to the National Board of Health's recommendations for prevention of obesity through physical activity and a nutritionally balanced diet (in Danish only).
